Simple Lower Back Therapy….Get STRONGER!
One of the most commonly overlooked factors in the back pain rehabilitation process is the development of strength. I don’t mean the type of strength you develop using wimpy physical therapy-type exercises, but REAL WORLD strength.
Now, don’t get me wrong, when I start out working with a back pain patient, I always give them exercises based on the level where they need to begin. That means if their back muscles are reminiscent of 2 scrawny strands of spaghetti, they are going to have to start with body-weight movements to build up their strength levels.
However, most therapists stop the strengthening process once the patient is out of pain. To me, this is ONLY the first step! If your long term goal is not only to overcome your back pain, but also includes STAYING out of pain, then you need to build MORE strength than is necessary for your normal daily activities.
How is this done? Simple. You have to PROGRESS your exercises. That means making them consistently harder as you get stronger and have less pain. Also, you need to progress the exercises from simple, isolated movements, to more complex, integrated movements that involve your whole body.
Just because your butt muscles are strong enough to do a supine bridge (below), that does not make you ready to move your refrigerator!!
